about

"Autodealer is an ambient act from Los Angeles, CA. His album “Circumstances” features a single called “Persephone”. The full album will be released on July 7, 2023.

My impressions: A cyclical wave of spinning arpeggios, stair-stepped, flowing, framed like a house. The sequences are repetitive but have subtle changes. The sound is abstruse but certainly seems positive. The song introduces the primary motif, develops, and then ends as quickly as it started. The piece reminds me of the greatest that the minimalist era has to offer. It has the emotional evocation of a Philip Glass orchestration blended with the subtle repetition of a Steve Reich construction. The application of harmony seems to change as the piano chords are played over the arpeggiated sequence. The string-like sound fade in gradually and feels almost choir-like. The full blend is heavenly. It evokes something timeless and grand, but wonderful to behold. There is a sequence of raindrops cascading across the middle of the song constructed from bright glistening synth plucks. The reverb builds and crests like the waves of a tide. The climax is intense but carries with it a great wash of pleasure. When the piano arpeggio comes back it has a hint of a questioning tone. It searches as much as it defines. The cascading notes built upon one another bring me to place of tense serenity. I am both highly stimulated and relaxed like a misty summer day."

"In this year I've become more familiar with the music of California's autodealer. An ambient project of one Matthew Richter, I've been lucky enough to see them on tour this year and able to witness a live imagining of Richter's ambient soundscapes. Since then I've got to give a listen into his studio works, namely "Structured Living For Young Minds" and "Circuit Dreams The Signal" along with the excellent Transverse collaboration with Jason Lamoreaux (The Corrupting Sea).

The opener to this new ambient adventure, "Fear Uncertainty Doubt" is a masterclass of sound spanning nearly ten minutes. With slow synths and minimal atmosphere the build is slow and sullen. If I had to compare the opening moments of this song it would be to Sea Power and the Disco Elysium Soundtrack as the atmosphere is somewhat destitute and sullen yet strangely hopeful.

And then the drums kick in, shifting into uncertain and unknown territories, swelling with noisy tones and a strange jolt of life with the original harmony of the song coming in towards the end to only add to this intense epic of an opener.

"Persephone" is a perfect palette cleanser with lush and busy piano rhythm and intricate sounds peeking overhead and around. Five minutes of bliss followed by the moody dark jazz of "Oblivion Rhetoric" curates a catchiness and chill in the wordless atmospheric.

The second half of the record is a solid thirty-one minutes of ambience in three tracks. "The Afternoon Knows" is a strange, lucid march driven by overwhelming seas of minimal sound complimented by a driving drum beat and vocal samples in something that's almost dancelike in it's observational sound. However the near fifteen-minute finale of "The Hardest Surface Reflects The Brightest Light" absolutely shines, pun intended. Heavenly minimal synths and a simple bass rhythm lulling, building to post-rock flutters and awakens with the listener bathed in a light of sound.

"Circumstances" is an excellent record and may well be one of the finest pieces in autodealer's line of work. The six songs presented are lush with atmosphere and imagination whether teasing with minimalist grace or lush with sonic life. Whether it's the context of healthy background noise or an intent observational listen it's been one I've thoroughly enjoyed.

By Circumstances, I've been led to a new light.

Highest Possible Recommendation."
